Leather of the highest quality full grain
Buffalo , Bull hide and Deer.

Leather Considerations- When choosing which leather and color to use consider the following

Buffalo is the thickest and runs about 8-10 ounces, is also very supple and breathes similarly to human skin, as it can release and absorb moisture, is the most durable of the heavy leathers and is the first choice for the main body. I also have Buffalo in a lighter weight of 3-5 ounces which I use for trim or for lighter weight moccasins. Because of these features it can adapt to any temperature and this is why it’s always comfortable to wear, no matter if it’s winter or summer.

Buffalo leather special or different from most store bought leather boots or moccasins.  For one it is a top grain leather, unlike cow hide leather made boots that have no top grain.  The Buffalo I use is also thicker than most leathers used on boots.  These two qualities make Buffalo able to shed water and absorb a quality leather conditioner oil like Montana Pitch Blend to make them very water resistant but remain breathable as well.  It also makes them more durable and tough than most leathers on the market.

Buffalo is also a supple leather that has stretch and some elastic give to it, again unlike cow, also allowing them to breathe, keeping the feet dry and smelling good.  Moccasins are made custom fit to the feet instead of being forced when wet to mold over a last that the feet have to conform to.  It also makes these moccasins machine washable.  This greatly extends the life by being able to remove the acids and salt buildup inside the moccasins which otherwise breaks down the leather and starts the rotting process.

Each dye lot differs, and each weight leather is a separate dye lot as well. This means that even if you choose just one color, the lightweight trim and the heavy weight main body will differ somewhat because of the different dye lot.

Light weight 3 -5 ounce weight Buffalo is a great option for light weight moccasins.

Deer is great for artwork only, about 3 ounces.
It has a great natural edge as well.
It is not suitable for the main body, toecap or heelcap
because it scuffs easily, is too light weight,
and will not hold up under any rugged use.

Bullhide is a close second to Buffalo in weight, about 7 ounces,
comes in some wild colors, but it is stiffer and not as supple as buffalo.
I recommend not using it for a toecap because of it’s stiffness
and inability to stretch well like the Buffalo.

Color differences can be noted on the photos of boots,
some darker, or even brighter than others of the same color.
This is due to different dye lots for each order of leathers.
Buffalo, Elk and Deer hides may contain natural range marks.

I do not stock all these leathers or colors.
